11-19-08 Treasured Letters From The Past

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 12:12 PM CST
While many of our men were overseas during World War II, many of the women took jobs in local factories manufacturing war materials. Alice Cooper worked at International Harvester in Chicago. Here is a letter to Alice from Chris Hillegonds on October 21, 1944:

Dear Alice: It’s Saturday afternoon out here, it’s been raining out here all day and it just started to clear up about ten minutes ago. It was a break for us though, we didn’t hardly do a thing all day long, we just lay around on our bunks and took it easy.

No, I’ve never been to The Dells, Alice. From the way you talk it must be a very nice place. Maybe someday when I get back I’ll have the chance to go there and I’m hoping and praying that it won’t be too far off. You were talking about Pete and Gert going to “The Barn” for a steak dinner. I’ve never heard of that place myself, or hasn’t it been there very long? I never used to go out to eat very much outside of once in a great while I would go to Phil Schmidt for a chicken or a fish dinner.

So things are slowing up in the shop? It seems to me that a lot of shops are slowing down and laying off their employees. I hope it’s a good sign that this mess will be over soon. I sure hope you don’t have to change jobs, not as long as you like the one you have, I’ve always said that if a person likes their job they are going to do much better work. Don’t you think so?

About that moving I was talking about, we didn’t move to a different island, we just moved to a different area, I guess the big shots finally decided that the place we were in wasn’t any too healthy especially when there were better and safer positions to be at.

Well, Alice, I think I’ll have to close for this time. I’ll be looking forward as always to be hearing from you again.

Love, Chris
