11-26-08 South Suburban Mayors Support Jackson For Senate
The electorate has spoken and mayors of the Second Congressional District are very excited that Senator Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States.
With that victory, Governor Rod Blagojevich’s appointment of his senate successor gives Illinois the opportunity to increase its dynamic leadership at the national level. As the governor considers potential appointees, south suburban mayors recommend that he give strong consideration to the Second District Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr.
Area mayors have worked closely with Congressman Jackson on many regional initiatives. They call him a model legislator and a tireless champion for his diverse district. His support of regional initiatives such as the third airport and the Southeast Metra line will benefit not only his constituents, but all of Illinois.
The mayors said Congressman Jackson is a true visionary. For 13 years, he has led efforts for new infrastructure, more jobs, clean water, and healthcare for all. That is true leadership, the kind of leadership needed in the Senate.
Governor Blagojevich’s appointment of the successor becomes even more important because Senator Obama is the only African-American United States Senator. Congressman Jackson, born in the midst of the American civil rights struggles of the '60s, would be a strong, symbolic choice who also has the youth, energy and experience necessary to focus on the large issues facing our country in the near and long term. He now sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which funds America's domestic and foreign programs and projects. He has a strong bond with our new President-elect Obama, which will undoubtedly benefit the citizens of Illinois.
While the governor will be considering a number of fine candidates, the mayors of the Second Congressional District believe none will fit as perfectly into the seat as Congressman Jackson and strongly encourage Governor Blagojevich to select Jesse Jackson.
