12-03-08 Educators Recognized With Awards

On Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Union League Club of Chicago, the Office of Economic Education at Governors State University was recognized at the 3M Economic Educator Award Luncheon.
The Illinois Council on Economic Education and its Centers are the premier providers in Illinois of economic education professional development programs for teachers; curriculum consulting; curriculum materials; and student economic education programs. The center at GSU is one of eight throughout Illinois and functions primarily to deliver economic education programs for K-12 schools, teachers, and students within its defined geographic area of responsibility.
Representatives from the Illinois Council on Economic Education and 3M presented Sheryl Szot Gallaher, Director of the Office of Economic Education at GSU, with a plaque honoring the 30th anniversary of the center.
Also presented with awards were teachers within the Governors State University district. Rhea Lindeman, a teacher at Heritage Middle School in Lansing, received an Economic Education Excellence Award which recognizes educators who have a sustained history of commitment and contribution to economic education. Lindeman received a plaque and cash award for her achievement.
Lauren Musielewicz, a teacher at Meadow Ridge School in Orland Park, received a first place Innovative Economic Educator Ward which recognizes teachers who create and implement innovative projects that increase economic understanding. Musielewicz received a plaque and cash award.
Sylvia Walter, a teacher at Wolcott School in Thornton, received an Innovative Economic Educator Honorable Mention Award. Honorable Mention winners receive a plaque and a coupon valued at $50 toward the purchase of NCEE economics education materials.

The Illinois Council on Economic Education is a unit within the division of NIU Outreach at Northern Illinois University. Through seven Centers for Economic Education at universities throughout the state, ICEE provides professional development programs for K-12 teachers, curriculum consulting, and student programs to enhance economic understanding.
The Illinois Council on Economic Education offers teachers and districts a multitude of resources through its statewide network of university-based Centers. A Center for Economic Education is established by and affiliated with both the state and national councils.
