12-28-11 South Suburban College To Host Paralegal Open House

Wednesday, December 28, 2011 8:02 AM CST
South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in Room 5190 at the University & College Center in Oak Forest. The Open House is targeted for individuals interested in learning about one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations. Information will be provided about SSC’s paralegal/legal assistant curriculum, including the AAS Degree and certificate programs.

SSC has the only ABA approved paralegal program in the south suburban Chicago region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workplace. The College also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction. The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in: legal research and writing techniques, including compilation and analysis of data; understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology; and preparation of legal documents.

Students utilize SSC’s program in preparation for law school in addition to the opportunity to gain immediate employment. Coordinator Bill Goren provides students with a great deal of expertise, in addition to an excellent understanding of the legal profession and of the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the legal workforce. SSC paralegal program coordinator Bill Goren has published three editions of his book, “Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act,” which is put out by the American Bar Association. He is also the author of a recent article published in The Educator, a journal for paralegal educators, on how to make sure a student chooses the right law school for them.

While the majority of the Paralegal classes are offered at the University & College Center, conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue in Oak Forest, some classes are offered online and some are offered at the Main Campus in South Holland. For more information, please contact either Ron Kawanna Jr., Dean of Legal Studies, at (708) 210-5807, RKawanna@ssc.edu or William D. Goren, Paralegal Program Coordinator, at wgoren@ssc.edu. Spring classes begin on Monday, January 9, 2012.
